Your Fall Cleanup Checklist for the Fraser Valley

Fraser Valley winters are mild but wet — and that combination is hard on a yard that hasn’t been prepared. A good fall cleanup protects your lawn and garden beds now and saves you work when spring arrives.

1. Keep leaves off the lawn

A thick layer of wet leaves blocks light and traps moisture against the grass, which can leave thin, yellow or mossy patches by spring. Clear leaves regularly through the season rather than waiting for the last one to fall.

2. Tidy garden beds

Pull spent annuals, cut back perennials that have finished, and remove diseased foliage so it doesn’t overwinter in the bed. Leaving a few seed heads and hollow stems standing is fine — they give birds and beneficial insects shelter.

3. Give the lawn a final mow

Keep mowing while the grass is still growing. A final cut at a normal height (not scalped) helps the lawn go into winter tidy and less prone to matting.

4. Aerate and feed

Early fall is a great time to aerate compacted lawns and apply a fall fertilizer, giving roots a boost before the cold sets in.

5. Clear debris and drainage paths

Branches, piles of clippings and debris around the edges of the property hold moisture and invite pests. Clearing them now keeps water moving away from beds and pathways through the rainy months.

  • Rake or blow leaves every week or two
  • Cut back finished perennials and pull annuals
  • Final mow at normal height
  • Aerate and fertilize in early fall
  • Clear debris from beds, edges and drainage areas
