After a long, wet winter, most yards need a reset. Doing things in the right order makes spring cleanup faster and sets your lawn and garden up for the whole growing season.
1. Clear winter debris
Start by removing branches, leftover leaves and anything that blew in over the winter. This lets light and air back to the lawn and makes the rest of the work easier.
2. Tidy and edge the beds
Cut back last year’s growth, pull early weeds while their roots are shallow, and re-cut bed edges for a crisp look. A fresh layer of mulch helps hold moisture and keep weeds down.
3. Wake up the lawn
Moss is common in our climate. Rake out thatch and moss, then consider aerating compacted areas and overseeding thin patches. Once the grass is actively growing, a spring fertilizer helps it green up.
4. First mow — go high
Wait until the grass is dry and growing, and keep the first few cuts on the higher side. Taller grass shades out weeds and builds deeper roots.
5. Plan your planting
Spring is a great time to add shrubs, perennials and seasonal colour. Hold off on frost-tender plants until the risk of frost has passed.
