Over time, foot traffic, mowing and heavy rain press soil particles together. Compacted soil makes it harder for air, water and nutrients to reach grass roots — so even a well-fed, well-watered lawn can struggle.
Signs your lawn is compacted
- Water puddles or runs off instead of soaking in
- Grass is thin in high-traffic areas
- Soil feels hard and a screwdriver is difficult to push in
- Moss is moving in where grass used to be
How core aeration works
A core aerator pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn, leaving behind openings that let air, water and fertilizer move down to the root zone. The plugs left on the surface break down naturally within a couple of weeks.
When to aerate
The best time is when the grass is actively growing — typically spring or early fall in the Fraser Valley — so it can quickly fill in the openings. Aeration pairs well with overseeding and fertilizing, because seed and nutrients reach the soil more easily.
